Hi I'm Gina and I'm an Internet Addict. If we ever had an Internet counterpart to the Alcoholics Anonymous meetings that's probably how meetings would start. Fortunately or unfortunately, we don't have that yet. Although the problem may already exist. Last week we hosted a workshop of researchers to talk about Internet Addiction in Asia. Attended by representatives from India, Singapore, Thailand, Hongkong, South Korea and the Philippines - it was certainly interesting to hear the different perspectives. From countries such as Singapore who practically have one computer per household to poorer countries such as ours whose computer adoption rate is still fairly low. From countries that encourage their people to use Internet to countries who now have boot camps for internet addicts. Despite the differences, a common sentiment was that the Internet has made an indelible mark on our society. However, we realized that we needed more rigorous data and knowledge on the good, the bad and the ugly of the internet.
On a personal note though, it made me realize how much a part of my life the Internet has become. From social networking sites, to checking my email, to obtaining information for work or pleasure - there is hardly a day that the internet does not touch my life. Now, I just need to ensure i am not enslaved by it. Still, can you imagine life without Internet?
